We are an integrator for the transportation, heavy industry, aerospace, and defense industries. GPS specializes in full-circle assembly system engineering and support: including process engineering, systems design, assembly tool manufacturing, automation integration and installation support. OPPORTUNITY: We are currently seeking a Controls Engineering Manager to strengthen and lead our advanced controls engineering team. This is an exciting opportunity to lead a world-class engineering team located in Pontiac, Michigan. This position requires working with cross-functional personnel to architect, program, commission and validate a wide array of automated manufacturing systems. The ideal candidate will possess a positive attitude, a “can do” mentality, have a servant/team management style, be self-governed, pay attention to details and driven to complete initiatives correctly and ahead of schedule. Must be aware and capable of implementing Industry 4.0 controls architectures and excited to move the team towards the future of controls engineering. POSITION DESCRIPTION: • This position reports to the Director of Engineering • Manage our internal controls engineering team, including contracted labor when required • Aid in supplier selection and manage externally sourced controls project content • Aid in the development and maintain department budget • Manage controls projects from conception through customer production support and after sales • Provide customer interface and maintain customer relationships • Develop and implement internal department policies and procedures • Maintain and improve department efficiencies and structure • Lead the hiring and selection process of advanced controls and automation engineers • Ensure employee development paths and necessary training are considered and properly integrated • Facilitate personnel and equipment allocations, including software and hardware • Follow safety standards (ANSI/RIA15.06, OSHA); implementing controls reliable safety systems for safeguarding robots, gantries, conveyors, and other various manufacturing equipment • Work with our customers to create data management and tracking communications network architecture and interface with cross-functional teams for product, processes and quality traceability control implementation • Select and lay out new industrial electrical control panels which are NFPA79/NEC/UL508A compliant, and create electrical, pneumatic, and fluid schematics Participate in initial equipment conceptual development and carefully balance product specifications, process requirements, layout complexity, cost, and lead-time limits • Demonstrate and lead the controls engineering team with best practices in architecting, programming and debugging controls systems with an emphasis on generating code that is organized, structured, documented, maintainable and reusable. • Working with PLC’s, industrial PC’s, subsystems such as conveyors, robots, machine vision, and other 3rd party equipment • Some current customers include: Ford, Honda, Challenge Manufacturing, Faraday Future, Oshkosh Corporation, PACCAR CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS: • 8+ years of experience as a hands-on Controls or Automation Engineer working on industrial automation systems • Software design and application knowledge with: - Rockwell Automation, Siemens and/or Omron - Multiple HMI and SCADA software’s • Industrial controls equipment experience with: - PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens and/or Omron) - Fieldbus networks (DeviceNet, Ethernet, ControlNet, CAN, PROFIBUS) - Safety PLCs (Rockwell Automation, Siemens Safety Integrated and/or Omron) - Safety rated fieldbus networks and serial communication (RS-232) • Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint • Wide range of application experience designing and debugging PLC code structure, including complex processes which involve multi-station parallel processing, pick and place automation, and data acquisition • Selection of appropriate circuit protectors, wire and cable, sensors, safety hardware, PLC hardware, remote I/O, VFD and servo systems • Design electrical schematics in CAD (AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN, etc.) • Able to travel locally and abroad. Must have a valid driver’s license and able to obtain a U.S. passport for occasional international travel PREFFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: • BS or MS Electrical Engineering (or equivalent – majors in controls and computer control systems, mechatronic engineering, automation engineering, etc.) • In-depth knowledge of electrical standards (NFPA79, National Electric code, UL508A) and safety standards (ANSI/ RIA15.06, OSHA) • SOLIDWORKS, CATIA a plus • Experience with LabVIEW • Experience with PID controllers • Experience programming robots are highly desired (Fanuc, ABB) • Experience with machine vision systems (Cognex, Keyence, Fanuc) • Experience with micro controller programming • Moderate to expert level proficiency in computer languages Due to ITAR requirements: we are not able to provide sponsorship currently.
